Field Lane find out what it’s like to be a Ref!
Field Lane are the latest club to take advantage of finding out what it is like to be a referee in an ‘Evening with a Referee’ event.
Members of the club were joined by Derbyshire based officials who have officiated at all levels of the game. The match officials discussed their role in depth and discussed how managers and coaches can work with the referee to help manage the behaviour of players.
The attendees also realised how difficult the job can be in the interactive challenge ‘You are the Ref!’.
There was also an opportunity for the club officials to ask questions about the laws of the game and other areas including administration which raised some interesting points that both the club and Derbyshire County FA can seek to develop further best practice in the future.

The Football Association has taken a new radical approach to tackling bad behaviour from fans and players by launching its own football club called Respect FC. The aim of the football club is not to win silverware or secure a Champions League place; it’s goal will be to unite fans against the ugly side of the beautiful game to create a safe and enjoyable environment in which it can take place.
Respect FC has a interactive social network website in which individuals from all areas of the game can sign up to support the football club and concept. The website can be accessed by clicking http://www.respectfootballclub.com/ . For every fan that joins Respect FC., The FA has pledged to put £1 back in to grassroots football (up to £50,000) and supporters of Respect FC have an opportunity to decide how this money is distributed.
Derbyshire County Football Association will be working with Leagues, Clubs, players, match officials and supporters to promote the positive message of Respect FC and will be promoting best practice across the county. Attention all football Clubs- An Evening with a Referee
An integral part of the Respect Programme is to improve the relationship between clubs and match officials. Derbyshire County Football Association would like to offer you the opportunity of hosting an ‘Evening with a Referee’ with some Senior Match Officials from Derbyshire at a future club meeting.
The content of the session can be bespoke towards your clubs needs and could feature ‘guest talks from match officials on both professional and grassroots games’, question and answers on the Laws of the Game’, and what the Respect programme means for Referees. There could also be an interactive feature ‘You Are the Ref’- which provides delegates an opportunity to assess how they would deal with a real life football scenario.
The opportunity is designed to provide and insight in to the role of the Match official and provide an avenue for parents, club officials and players to ask any questions on the Laws of the Game or the role of the referee.
If you are interested in hosting a session with Match officials please contact me on 01332 361422 or by email on cath.morton@derbyshirefa.com and I will liaise with you and Nigel Smith, Referee Development Officer to put something in place. All you will need to supply is a venue, my colleagues will bring along all the necessary equipment to facilitate the evening
