MIDLANDS COUNTIES YOUTH LEAGUE U16
Sunday 7TH Febuary 2010
Moorways Stadium, Derby.
Derbyshire FA U16 2 v 0 Leicestershire & Rutland FA U16
The game got off to a very lively start and it was in the 15th minute when Derbyshire had their first chance to take the lead after a good run down the right by Evan Garnett, who squared from the by-line only for the Leicestershire defence to clear off the line.
On the half hour Leicestershire went close with a shot from Asa McCoy which sailed over the bar, and then again 5 minutes later when they were awarded a free kick just outside the box which was well saved by keeper Ryan Hopkins. Leicestershire were now coming more and more into the game as the referee brought an end to the first 40 minutes.
Derbyshire took control from the start of the second half, taking the lead on 44 minutes with a goal from Tom Lewis. Derbyshire were now having their best spell and on the 50th minute Ross Coxon had the opportunity to double the lead but shot wide of the upright.
In the 66th minute Leicestershire had their best chance to draw level when they were awarded a penalty kick after Lewis was shown a straight red for handling a goal-bound ball. Leicestershire No16 Elliott Norton stepped up to take the spot kick only to put it wide of the keeper’s right hand post.
Leicestershire were now pushing for the equaliser against the 10 men of Derbyshire and came close with a powerful drive hitting the bar. The game was finally settled when Evan Garnett broke through impressively down the left and found Ross Coxon, who placed his shot perfectly into the corner of the net. With just 5 minutes remaining there was no way back for Leicestershire & Rutland.
