Under 16s Slip Up

Derbyshire’s Under 16s narrowly lost out to West-Riding in a close-fought contest.

Sunday 15th NOVEMBER 2009 at Moorways Stadium

Following two excellent opening games confidence was running high and Derbyshire took control from the start. In the ninth minute Tom Lewis latched onto the ball in midfield, rounding the West Riding defence to fire a superb low shot into the bottom left of the net, leaving keeper Nick Hesketh with no chance.

Derbyshire were having most of the play and on the twentieth minute went close when a low drive was pushed round the post, by the keeper, for a corner.

Derbyshire’s best spell was undoubtedly the opening twenty minutes, after which West Riding started to come more into the game. The equalizer came in the thirty-fifth minute when Oliver Murray’s cross found unmarked Daniel O’Connor, whose powerful low drive flew past keeper Jack Jorden.

Derbyshire began the second half well, going very close within a minute of the restart, then again in the fifty fourth minute when Ross Coxon’s great strike was well saved by substitute keeper Daniel Greaves. Almost immediately the visitors were denied a goal by the woodwork.

Derbyshire would have taken the lead in the sixty-seventh minute had Coxon not been denied by the impressive Greaves. Minutes later at the other end Derbyshire’s substitute keeper Ryan Hopkins needed all his agility to tip the ball over from a powerful header by West Riding’s No 9.

The winning goal came five minutes from time when a flag kick taken by West Riding’s Jamie Taylor was struck home by Jordan Foulds. On the eightieth minute the visitors could have increased their lead but for the advancing keeper Hopkins saving well with his feet.

The next U16 game is away at WEST RIDING in the League Cup on the 20th December 2009.
