Derbyshire County FA Sunday Senior Cup final played Sunday 28th April on the ground of Belper Town FC.

Chesterfield and District Sunday League sides, Clowne Wanderers and Hasland FC were seeking to improve on recent achievements of being runners up in the competition.

The weather and the game started brightly, chances fell to both teams in the early stages. The best opportunity fell to Hasland’s Ant Lynam with a free kick that was put over the bar after 15 minutes.

Not long after Clowne’s Anthony Rowley had an opening to put his side ahead but his shot also skimmed the crossbar.

The deadlock was eventually broken in the 35th minute when Hasland’s Lynam led the attack from his half. He collected the ball just inside the Clowne half evading three tackles before unleashing a powerful shot from 30 yards out, that hit the underneath of the crossbar and landed in the goal. It was described by some as a “wonder goal”.

Hasland’s Dale Crowder came close to extending his sides lead two minutes later when his far post header was well held by Gareth Briggs in the Wanderers goal ensuring he kept the deficit to one goal before the half time whistle.

Clowne drew level ten minutes into the second half, Rowley had his header scrambled off the line, but the resultant corner provided the equaliser. The corner kick came over and Ben Carless was well positioned to volley the ball home from just inside the penalty box to make it 1-1.

The goal prompted Clowne into lifting their game. Another effort from Rowley was well saved before a swift break provided his team mate Josh Clayton with a comfortable chance to put his side ahead, but he was unable to do so.

With 15 minutes to go a speculative cross from the left was amazingly left by three Clowne defenders leaving Hasland’s Ben Goodwin completely unmarked to prod home from close range.

This surprise goal left the Wanderers totally deflated for the remainder of the game after they had looked capable of a strong finish to the tie.

It ended 2-1 in Hasland’s favour and they finally lifted the Derbyshire County FA Sunday Senior Cup.
