grass pitch

Over £727k invested into improving grass pitches

Since December 2019, £727,256 has been invested into grass pitches in Derbyshire through a new funding stream from the Football Foundation.

The Football Foundation, in partnership with the Grounds Management Association (GMA), developed the Grass Pitch Improvement and Maintenance Programme to improve grass pitches across the country.

The new funding package window opened on the 5th December 2019, and thus far 26 sites in Derbyshire have been successful in obtaining £727,256 investment into Grass Football Pitches across the County.

The funding opens up the opportunity for sites to invest in enhanced maintenance services (funded at 66% of the total cost) and/or machinery grants (at 75% of the total cost).

If a site is categorised as Poor or Basic on their Grass Pitch Assessment Report (GPAR) they are then eligible to apply for Grass Pitch Funding through the Football Foundation.

The key principles behind the service are to provide members of the programme with advice/practical solutions via a Grass Pitch Assessment Report, which will also identify the key enhanced maintenance works required along with machinery requirements.

The Derbyshire FA would like to take this opportunity to thank the Premier League, The FA and Government’s Football Foundation for launching this new funding stream, as this unprecedented investment will help to create a grass pitch revolution throughout Derbyshire.

The Derbyshire FA's ambition is to continually improve the quality of the grass pitches, and this funding stream will greatly help efforts to transform the lives of players and strengthen communities.

A plan that would transform an already outstanding playing venue and surface into something our members and wider community could be proud of.

"Upon weedkilling and grass treatment the weeds were noticeably dying after two days, leaving a lush thick green grass playing carpet. Having spoken in detail with Mark at Rigby Taylor (the grass specialists) I became fascinated in the science and technology of grass seed and fertilizer.

"What’s a club’s biggest asset I was asked? Answer: It’s Grass!

"Failure to look after any asset would in time cost more to rectify and this applies to our grass. Mark recommended an application of over-seed and fertiliser, for which this grant has allowed us to comply with our plan, something we could never afford in its absence.

"The science in the grass seed alone is something more appropriate to a space programme than grassroots football, but the results have been staggering and so noticeable on a daily basis. The amount of grass seed and fertilizer received in our first grant advance was simply staggering and the results have been wonderful.

"Working with Liam at my County FA and the Football Foundation has enhanced my passion for grassroots football and I cannot wait to see the results in six years time, when I envisage Booths will look like Wembley, if not better.
