Tintwistle Athletic win Derbyshire Divisional Cup North with injury time winner

Tintwistle Athletic 1-0 Glapwell

In an end-to-end cup final tie, Tintwistle Athletic were crowned Derbyshire Divisional Cup North Winners through Tom Beswick’s 94th minute penalty.

Alfreton Town FC’s Impact Arena hosted the Derbyshire Divisional Cup North final 2022/23, sponsored by Cawarden. Tintwistle Athletic, of the Manchester Football League Division One, faced Central Midlands Premier Division North side, Glapwell.

The first clear chance of the game came after 17 minutes when Tintwistle’s Dom Dallas had an effort on goal saved by Etheridge. The following corner required a goal line clearance from Glapwell defender James Beardow to keep the game scoreless.

After 36 minutes, Glapwell’s Ben Copestake delivered a fantastic low cross into the box, but nobody was there to meet it.

With minutes to go before the break, Tintwistle went close again; This time Kieran Cryan having his shot saved by Etheridge.

The whistle blew for half-time at 0-0. A very even, close encounter.

Around 70 minutes in, Glapwell were enjoying a strong spell and went close on a number of occasions. Dan Havern made some good saves for Tintwistle to keep the score level, as well as a goal line clearance from a Tintwistle defender.

Into the dying minutes of the ninety, it looked more and more likely that the game would end goalless, and a penalty shootout would be needed. The fourth official indicated 5 minutes of injury time.

In the 4th minute of injury time, a Tintwistle man was brought down in the box, and referee Brad Taylor pointed to the spot. Tom Beswick stepped up for Tintwistle and smashed it home to break the deadlock in the final seconds of the game! Elation for Tintwistle; Heartbreak for Glapwell.

Soon after, the full-time whistle blew, with the final score being Tintwistle Athletic 1-0 Glapwell.

The players, coaches and spectators celebrated as the trophy presentation, presented by Cawarden, saw them lift the cup. The Player of the Match was awarded to Tintwistle’s Paul Higgingbottom for his tireless and determined performance.

The attendance at the Impact Arena was 262.
