The final of the Derbyshire Sunday Senior Cup, sponsored by Cawarden, was hosted at Long Eaton United FC’s Grange Park in front of 176 spectators.
George & Dragon enjoyed quite the start to the game, going 2-0 up in the first 15 minutes. Just 4 minutes in, Ty Macaskill opened the scoring. He chased the loose ball into the box and beat the keeper to the ball, sliding it into the goal. Ten minutes later, Lewis Macaskill’s ferocious finish doubled George & Dragon’s lead.
After 28 minutes, Mutton found a goal back. A corner was floated in and met the head of forward Jordan Hendley, who guided the ball into the bottom corner.
Mutton’s celebrations wouldn’t last long, as after 33 minutes Lewis Macaskill received the ball on the right, burst through the defence and scored a spectacular goal to make it 3-1. He was at it again just three minutes later, smashing home his third goal of the day after a delightful through ball put him through on goal. A first half hat-trick for the George & Dragon forward.
The sides went in at half-time with George & Dragon leading Mutton by 4-1.
After 64 minutes, Mutton had a goal back after a swift counter attack led by Tom Suter was finished by Jordan Hendley for his second goal of the game. 4-2.
Mutton really started to dream, as after 70 minutes, they scored again to make it 4-3! A terrible mix up in the box allowed Suter to tap the ball home, and it seemed as though an unbelievable comeback could be on the cards.
77 minutes in, Mutton had the ball in the back of the net for an equaliser but the offside flag was raised.
Unfortunately for Mutton, despite a strong second half showing the equaliser didn’t come. In injury time, the side received a red card before George & Dragon broke away and settled the tie with a fifth goal; Ty Macaskill finished off a good move for his second of the day.
The full-time whistle blew soon after and the game finished Newton George & Dragon 5-3 Mutton.
