85 year old Derbyshire referee goes viral!

Local match official Terry Whittaker spoke to SportBible after viral tweet from Mickleover Athletic FC

An 85 year old match official from Derbyshire WENT viral on social media for his dedication to GRASSROOTS football.

 

A few weeks ago, Mickleover Athletic FC tweeted a photo of local match official Terry Whittaker with the caption, "We were assigned 85 years young Terence Whittaker as linesman in todays game. He very proudly told us today was his 2082nd fixture and 67th consecutive season." The tweet received waves of attention of praise from all over, with over 10,000 likes and over one million views.

 

Terry Whittaker, from Shipley, Derbyshire, qualified as a referee in 1968 and went on to officiate at the highest level. As a Football League Assistant Referee, he featured in a number of memorable fixtures, including the infamous Derby vs Leeds clash in 1975. He still officiates to this day in the Midlands Regional Alliance across Derby and Derbyshire.
