Match Report: Stapenhill 6-0 Borrowash Victoria
STAPENHILL HIT BORROWASH VICTORIA FOR SIX IN COMFORTABLE WIN AS THEY PROGRESS TO THE THIRD ROUND OF THE DERBYSHIRE SENIOR CHALLENGE CUP
The tie was hosted at Maple Grove, Stapenhill, in front of a crowd of over 90 supporters.
The hosts took the lead from a set-piece after just 14 minutes. Lewis Campbell whipped in the corner, and Ben Novis connected with a well-timed volley to find the back of the net. Just 10 minutes later, Novis grabbed his second goal of the game. A mistake in Borrowash’s defence allowed the forward to be 1-on-1 with the keeper, and he guided his effort into the bottom corner. Stapenhill scored their third goal after 29 minutes and it was a cracker. Sam Birks received the ball in the middle of the pitch and dribbled past four or five players all the way into the opposition box before coolly finishing past Marcus Coombs.
Both goalkeepers made fantastic saves within the space of around a minute early into the second half. Firstly, Borrowash ‘keeper Coombs parried away a strong strike by Ryan King. Then, Borrowash broke away on the counterattack and carved a brilliant chance to get on the scoreboard, which was denied by Swans goalie Paul Hollis. Hollis made a low save at the strikers feet, and then gets his hands on the rebound to keep his clean-sheet intact.
Stapenhill made it 4-0 after 65 minutes, when tricky winger Tommy Large skipped past the fullback and fired home. Borrowash had no luck catching the Swans as they got their fifth goal of the evening after 70 minutes. Jude Ayetine finessed his strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Borrowash had a decent chance to score in the 73rd minute when Dylan Muir spotted the goalkeeper off his line, but his speculative effort soars over the bar. Stapenhill made it 6-0 after 85 minutes, when Cameron Steele’s smart finish sails into the top corner.
The man of the match award was given to Sam Birks, scorer of the third goal, and was presented to him by representatives from Derbyshire County Cup sponsors Cawarden.
This victory means Stapenhill are in the hat for the third round of the Senior Challenge Cup for the first time in their 76-year history. The draw will take place before the end of this week.
